Did you know that, according to the Pew Research Center, roughly 5 million U.S. households with school-aged children don’t have high-speed internet access? That’s 5 million plus students who are not able to do their online courses. The Broward County School District may just say go to a public library and do the online course or stay after school with one of the programs. But what they’re not thinking about is that not everyone is able to be transported to a library, and many high school students are juggling school and working at a job. In addition, there’s so little emphasis placed on the online course requirement that students just forget to do it.
“There are many kids I know who don’t have a computer at home” says Jeremiha, a student at Boyd Anderson High School.
Most high school students forget that they even have to do an online course to graduate. So even if they do have a computer, some schools do not talk about students doing their online course credit enough that students forget about it.
“I know I have to an online course to graduate but I don’t have enough time to do it. There honestly should be a class to do the online course, because after school I shower and then go to work and after that I have homework to do,” says another student who attends Boyd Anderson High School.
Even if students know they need an online course, some just don’t get around to it in their busy day. Having a class at school can help kids who do not have enough time in their day.
A teacher at Boyd Anderson High School says, “There should be a class for kids who need to finish their online requirement and for students who want to graduate early.” Having this class will not only allow students to finish their online requirement but it will also allow students to finish another course they need at the same time. For example, if the student needs to do a world history class and they need to do their online course they can do an online course about world history.
So, Cobras, having an online course class during school would help those students who don’t have access to computers at home or don’t have time to fulfill this requirement during the day. For the rest, it would mean using the online courses to fulfill another requirement at the same time and kill two birds with one stone.
