Covid 19/Distance Learning: SOS To Teachers & An Online Petition to Void 4th Quarter

Distance learning has me wanting to go back to school so bad. It’s horrible and stressful. It has me wanting to cry and give up.

Teachers are assigning tons of work left and right in a single a day and having it due the next day.  They don’t seem to be aware that learning this way is new to us and we have five or six other teachers to worry about. While they’re dropping loads of work on us, our grade-books are still empty.  Like, how does that work? We’re having assignments due on days off from school and on weekends. We aren’t getting a break. Soon as you think you’re done and caught up on work, there are five assignments uploaded and three due at the blink of an eye.

What’s making it even worse is that we’re weeks away until summer.  It was supposed to be a to be smooth ride from here on out to graduation. Instead, it feels like teachers are taking out their anger out on us.  This has led students around the state to sign a petition urging  Gov. Ron DeSantis to intervene: “Florida Schools Should Void 4th Quarter Grading and Pass All 2019/2020 Classes”on

The only positive thing coming out of all this is that we aren’t waking up at 5-6:00 in the morning anymore. But that’s a small perk. Distance learning was supposed to help us maintain the same pace we had at school. Instead, it’s ruining us. We aren’t even socializing anymore or checking up on others. We call each other for help on work and that’s it. We used to have group chats where we would be cracking jokes, we were making plans, and we were happy.   Now, our group chats consist of kids stressing, asking for help with assignments, and telling each other what we’re going through.

The district needs a better solution. Teachers need to have pace charts. If not, sooner or later, you’re going to have kids not caring anymore and dwindling numbers of students working and submitting assignments. It’s just too much for one person.  This is a time when we can’t go anywhere, family stress is piling up, and we’re stuck in the house all day feeling trapped.  The nonstop assignments are making matters worse.

Distance learning is proving to be a 9-5 job, but without pay.
